Good Fences #28

This is a safety plea.
New gates are hung with hinges that are drilled all the way through the post.  We have several of these on new sections of fence that have been built recently.   J and I have said many times how we need to cut these off.  Well, a good friend just lost her horse to a hinge like this.  It ran into the bolt with it's neck and bled to death.
J and I were out there the next day sawing these off,
both top and bottom hinges.
I feel a little better now.  Horses can find any number of ways to hurt themselves, we don't need to make it any easier for them.

Thanks for showing us how the gates are attached. And I'm glad the bolts have bee sawed off so no horses will be harmed there!

Exactly...and when they ARE hurt, their psyche tends to make it even worse to help them out.

You did good!!

oh, how terrible for your friend. you're right about horses finding plenty of ways to get hurt without our help.

Oh my. Yes, hearing a story like that would spark me into action right away too.

My first thought was that was a hazard sticking out and then was relieved to see it sawn off.

What a very sad ting to happen to your friend's horse. These look very sturdy fences.

I am sorry for your friend! I am glad you took care of the hazard before anything could happen?

Oh I am so very sorry to learn that your friend lost her horse in this manner. Thankfully you are responsible people and removed the bolts to make it safer for horses. Neat to see how they are drilled though.

Wow, hate to think of a poor horse dying that way. Glad you were able to cut these off before anything happened at your place.
