Another FHO

This one was a little different than the last.  It started as a fracture on an 8 week old puppy.  The progression goes from the upper left to right, then lower left to right.  The problem with a young puppy is that there are so many growth plates it is sometimes hard to tell the exact extent of the injuries.  But clearly, the right femoral head was broken.  The second radiograph was about a month later.  You can see how the femoral neck is remodeling.  

Then today, 6 months later, the surgery was schedualed for when more of the growth plates had closed.  The femoral head has continued to grow, even larger than the good side.  This made it very challenging to remove.  But since it was already broken in the right spot, I didn't have to make any additional cuts into the bone. 

This is the joint side of the head, the dark spot in the center is where the round ligament attached it to the pelvis.  

And this is how the fractured side looked.  It is interesting that the joint cartilage has extended almost entirely around the piece.  Removing this piece that is rubbing bone on bone, should make this dog's life more comfortable after everything heals.
