Found

The goats were in the driveway and down near the road when I went out to take E to school.  On my way back past going to work I stopped to run them back up the drive.  On the very steep bank between the drive and the main road I found this.  

Now what a very nice blue insulator was doing there I don't know.  But it will look nice with my collection.

Clean, Rain, Repeat

I clean the cattle guard, it rains, repeat.  

 As you know, it's a cattle guard not a horse guard.  When it snowed so much a couple of weeks ago, it filled in with snow and ice and the horses got out again.  So we've been having to put the horse gate (dog cable with plastic bags for visibility) up over the cattle guard.  This pretty much defeats the purpose of being able to drive across it with out having to get out and in and out and in.

  The first 2 slots were already filled in with gravel that has washed down the driveway and the rest with leaves and pine needles.  

After 30 minutes with the hoe and shovel I got it all cleaned out. (except for those 2 leaves which have already started the process over again)

Back to driving in and out unencumbered (at least for the time being).  Of course, that's not taking the cattle guard at the house into consideration.  It still has to have the Hank guard and now the goat guard over it.

Surprise

We didn't want the goats to start kidding until May.  Unfortunately, the billy goat got out one day for a few hours last fall.  J's been keeping an eye on the nannies and several were looking close.   There was a set of twins yesterday and another set today.  

 Today's were hiding up in the pine trees.  The nanny wasn't with them but Bea was.  I didn't get a picture of her with them because my battery quit after one picture.   Then she got distracted with me there and followed me out to the other goats.  But pretty amazing, she seems to have more maternal instincts toward the baby goats than a lot of the goats do.

I went back this afternoon to check on them and they were fine.  Looks like 3 more are pretty close.  Hope the good weather holds out but I'm afraid it's suppose to rain tomorrow.

Unbelievable Deal

Even though we feed our own beef I can't help checking out the meat counter at the grocery store.  I usually look at the flat iron steaks to see if they are on sale.  It is the most tender cut and usually a better deal than a filet mignon.  It is also a cut we don't get with our beef.  

Imagine my surprise to see a $9.44 steak marked down to one cent. We obviously can't raise it for that so of course I had to buy it.  Now that's a deal.  

Just Kit Sunday

I'm testing out a new feature, Just Kit Sunday, for all of you Kit Kat fans.  Maybe I can manage to get a good picture of him at least once a week to post on Sundays.

Sunshine

We finally are having some sunshine.  After weeks of snow, sleet, rain, and freezing rain, the sun came out yesterday afternoon.  

 The horses were all soaking it up.

All the horses laying down at one time, now that's something you don't see very often.

Sissy's Pedicure

Sissy spends her days hanging out at the barn eating with the heifer J's feeding for a beef.  J is tires of feeding /seeing Sissy.  He would like for her to be gone.  I thought about putting a picture of her on Craig's List but E said her feet looked too bad.  They have over grown because she never will leave the barnyard. 

 So it was off to the equipment cabinet to pull out the hoof trimmers my sister had when she had sheep 35 years ago.

 We were surprised that they were still sharp enough to work.

 Of course, Emma had to help out the best she could.

 J did the fronts and I did the rears.
