Driveway Video Game

Going down the driveway the other day, I had the impression of being in a video game. 

First came the dodging of the cow pies. 

Then there were the maneuvers to get the calves out of the way.

Once they started going they set off the alarm to warn the cows,

                               who all turned and started running toward me. 

 I just needed a button that I could press to start shooting obstacles out of my way.

 

A Few More Turned Out

We had enough first calf heifers that had calved to work and get turned out on our rented pasture. 

It was just a matter of getting them to the barn and sorting out the few that had not calved yet. 

The cows got a mineral shot and a 10 way bred back vaccine. 

They also got a pour on dewormer. 

The calves got a 7 way clostridia vaccine and a 5 way respiratory vaccine.  J and I didn't get any help since it was just 17 pairs. 

Then we loaded up the trailer for 3 trips to the neighbors farm.  I think they are going to enjoy the new grass and J will enjoy being able to check on the ones that haven't calved without all of these in the way.

Bad Teeth

I saw a 13 year old beagle Thursday for a cough and check eye.  I asked how long has he been coughing, "two years".  No report of increased intensity or frequency.  His heart and lungs were fine.  His teeth were terrible.  He is breathing in, swallowing and absorbing all of this.  Oh, and his eye had a pressure of 84, normal is 15-25 so it had glaucoma and was blind in that eye.  Glaucoma is very painful.  I said we usually don't want to do a dental along with a major surgery (removing the eye) but I was making an exception in this case because both things needed to be done right away.

                     I said it looked like a cave with stalactites and stalagmites.

19 teeth pulled, I know it looks like more but several of the 2 and 3 rooted teeth had to be split to pull them one root at a time.  I will spare you the eye.  He was eating canned food 2 1/2 hours after surgery.  Hopefully, he will be feeling like a new dog soon.  
 Don't make your senior dogs live with a mouth like this just because you are scared of anesthesia.  They are suffering.  

What Is That Thing?

On our evening goat check we found a nanny with one big kid, and one very small dead one.

But she still had something hanging out.  It didn't look at all like it was suppose to. Any guesses? 

It was our very first prolapsed uterus.  Not really a good accomplishment.  I was able to get it back in but didn't have anything with me to put a retaining suture in with, so we are just hoping for the best.  When I went back a couple of hours later to check on her, it was still in and she wasn't straining.  Fingers crossed it will still be in by morning.

Small Engine Repair

Last fall I tried to till the garden one last time but the tiller wouldn't start.  J determined it wasn't getting any fuel.  On closer inspection, the fuel line had deteriorated.  All winter I thought I would get it fixed.  Then son-in-law M showed up with a repair kit.  Thankyou!  Unfortunately, we had other things for him to do so the tiller took the back burner again.  Until today, 

I got out the instructions, read through them several times and decided to give it a try. 

Tada, 2 newly installed lines, 

and a new bulb.  J started it with 2 pulls, easier than it has started for the last 2 years.  But now there is a little leak from the tank around where the lines enter.  Is there some way to seal that area off.  Maybe M can take a look next time he is here.  It makes me wish I had taken the small engine 4-H course that my father use to teach.  He was truly a wealth of information on nearly any subject.  
 

Couponing #68

This deal was actually "no coupon needed."  It was a glitching self-checkout (SCO) promotion and I happened to be at the right place at the right time to take advantage of it.  There is no self-checkout at my store, but I was going to town anyway for a haircut this morning, so I stopped there to try the deal.  The $3.50 Jiffy disposable aluminum pans were ringing up full price then taking $3.49 off at the SCO.  I did a test with just one first and it worked!   I went back and got 5 more then had to go to my appointment. 

After a few more errands in town, I stopped again on my way home and got 9 more.

I don't use these pans because at full price I think I would just use my regular pans. I would feel like I would have to wash the disposable pan and reuse it.   But at a penny, I might have to start finding a use for them.  I saw where some people were just filling up buggies and clearing the shelves.  I just felt a little odd about it so didn't go to that extreme.  Apparently, they fixed the glitch by the afternoon. 
 

Playmate

Zipper loves going out to check on the goats because she gets to play with the other dogs. 

Molly is the youngest of the guard dogs and Zipper has really taken to her.
