Strip Grazing

J has been strip grazing the hay field this fall. We have a one strand electric fence that he puts across the field to let the cattle have enough grass for 3-4 days. Then he moves the fence to let them have a little more.
Once they get use to this the cattle act pretty crazy. When they see J they rush to the fence. Therefore, we have to move them out of the field before he can move the fence, then let them back in.
They are getting to the point where I don't even scare them anymore.

Fall Decorations

A friend gave me a few pumpkins a couple of weeks ago.
Since we live so far off the road I didn't bother with a Jack-O-Lantern this year, but I am still enjoying the bright orange colors.

Feeding Time

After the calves are weaned the goal is to try and get them to start eating a concentrate feed. It always seems like the scrawny calves take off eating better that the fat ones. J has to haul out 400 pounds of feed in his trusty wheelbarrow. (It's the same one I remember watching my father mix batch after batch of cement in to build rock walls. And carry me around in the yard after picking up leaves in the fall.)
He then pours it into the troughs 50 pounds at a time.

It looks like most are starting to take to it pretty well.

Pergola

Progress is finally being made on the pergola. After months of looking at a bear patch of dirt I at last made a trip to Lowe's and purchased the necessary supplies.
J dug the post holes for me today. I hope to start on the top tomorrow.

Working Pens

We recently improved the working facilities at our other farm. I don't have a picture that does justice to the before, but suffice it to say a lot of twine was involved.

Now we have several sorting pens, a loading alley, and a covered head gate. I think things will run smoother the next time we have to work the cattle here.

Trail Ride

We went on a little trail ride Sunday afternoon. The weather was beautiful and the horses all acted well.
J had to make 2 trips to bring the horses since we only have a 3 horse trailer. This is how we waited on him to get Lady from his dad's house.
This was a particularly rocky section of the trail. E no longer apologizes to Pep for making her go across rough ground.
V took the lead with Jessica Rabbit and followed by J for most of the ride. I tried to keep Thumper behind E so she wouldn't be by herself too much.

Oreo

Oreo has been into quite a few things this fall. After I pulled out a bunch a annuals, raked and swept, I found him in this mess.
He enjoys a variety of different water sources. Here he is drinking from a tire water trough.
He also likes to try and annoy Emma every chance he gets.
