Good and Bad

We had a calf that had not been doing well for a couple of days.  This morning, we spent over and hour in the rain looking for it, then another hour trying to get it to the barn.  We ended up having to haul it in the tractor loader.
I thought we were just going to run down and give it an antibiotic shot so I didn't even wear a raincoat.  Once Joe roped it and we examined him, we saw that it was theileria from the ticks.  So the plan changed to get him to the barn with the cow and do a blood transfusion.
But it was also Camp Mimi day with Sadie and Allie.  I finally got the transfusion done but it was very complicated.   Back at the house, Allie had to have a change of clothes and I had to have my third change.  Sadie just took her clothes off and didn't want to put anything back on.  I was at least able to convince her to put on a tee shirt.
After a late lunch, I pulled out a game from my youth,  Hands Down.  The "slam-o-matic" was a big hit.
Then we played a game of Lego, Race to Build It.  Sadie wanted to play a second time but Allie just wanted to play with the blocks.  I ended up taking Sadie to the TV room for another surprise game.  Allie didn't last long by herself with the Legos, and she joined us.
We spent the rest of a rainy day (almost 2 inches) playing Wii Fit.

They had a ball.  But there was lots of reminders about how to take turns.  We sent them home after supper and probably ready for bed.
Joe and I then went back to the barn to check the calf.  It died while I was giving it more IV fluids. It was a rough day.

Snow Day

There was only an inch of snow but it was enough to close Sadie’s school but Allie’s day care was open.  So I volunteered to watch Sadie for the day. After playing with the kitchen, Barbie’s and dollhouse Sadie wanted to play a game.
I finally found one with all the pieces that didn’t need batteries.
It said for ages 7 and up but Virginia had told me Sadie liked playing with legos. And she is 4 now.   She loved the game and didn’t need much help. We played 3 times before we had to break for lunch. (Sadie 2, Mimi 1)
Despite the bad weather she still wanted to go feed the animals with PopPop.
She is always ready to help carry the buckets.
Lucy and Ricky were a lot bigger since she had last seen them and decided Joe could go in and pour the feed out.
Sadie has gotten very brave with Molly.  She said Molly likes to sniff her.
She petted Molly for a long time.
Then we hiked back to the house for some Unicorn Academy until it was time to go home.

Driveway Video Game

Going down the driveway the other day, I had the impression of being in a video game.
First came the dodging of the cow pies.
Then there were the maneuvers to get the calves out of the way.
Once they started going they set off the alarm to warn the cows,
who all turned and started running toward me.
I just needed a button that I could press to start shooting obstacles out of my way.

Parks Board Game

E received the game Parks for Christmas.
It looked like a good fit for a naturalist interested in hiking and visiting the National Parks.   Four of us tried to play it yesterday.  Between us all were 4 undergraduate degrees, 3 masters degrees and a DVM.
Note the ages and time to play.  And interestingly, you can play by yourself.
The game is super cute, nice game piece,
and beautiful graphics.
After an hour of reading the 10 pages of directions we finally had the board set up. We managed 1 round of turns with mostly illegal moves before giving up.  I really have no idea how a 10 year old could figure this out.  E decided we needed to try it when we were more rested and maybe with just 2 people, then add in more as we figured things out.  I have since watched a couple more youtube videos and think I am ready to try again.  I'll let you know how it goes.
