Fall Group Weaning

Once again, J had all the prep work done, and I just had to show up.

 He had gotten the cows and calves into a smaller lot next to the working pens the night before. 

 So it was just a matter of moving them over. 

 And they all cooperated. 

 The pens were pretty crowded at the start.  We just had to let the cows that we were keeping out first.  Then, sorted out some that were to be culled.  I had to pregnancy check 3, all open just like J thought.  He watches them close enough to pretty much know which ones will be open so I don't have to check all 60.  Pretty sure I couldn't do that any more anyway.   As long as he keeps it under 10 at a time, I'm ok. 

 Then from the calves we sorted out 10 heifers to keep as replacements. 

All the other calves got brought back to the house and dewormed.  There was a lot of bawling last night.   Just checked the Farmer's Almanac and it looks like we should have waited until the 22nd.  Oh well.

Cabbage

We harvested our first cabbage head ever.  It weighed 5 1/2 pounds.

Anyone got a good cabbage recipe?

I also picked 11 cucumbers today.  This is in addition to the 8 E picked yesterday.

Yard Ornament IV

J inherited this wheelbarrow from a great aunt several years ago. He used it to haul feed at the barn until the wood holding the wheel split. Then he gave it to me. I've made use of in in the yard for about 5 years. I find I like growing the Wave Petunia in it best.

Spot

Our paint horse Spot always gets sunburned around his left eye where the skin is white. This year I thought I would try putting the fly mask on him to see if it helps.I think it has helped so far, but it sure makes him look funny.

According to the Farmer's Almanac, tomorrow will be a good day to make sauerkraut.

Bulls

We turned the bulls out with different groups of cows on Tuesday.

There is usually a lot of bellowing before going off to find the cows.

This should put calving to start about March 20th next year.

According to the Farmer's Almanac the weather for June 13th-22nd T-storms, then sunny, then warm.

Hay

J had me raking hay again today.Getting the rake ready.
