New Event

Earlier this summer V said she would like to try barrel racing.  It's a good thing we have Hank the Wonder Horse because it just so happens that he can run pretty fast and turn quick.  So V has been practicing some getting use to his speed.  Well, now she had changed her mind and wants to try an over fences class.  Once again, Hank to the rescue.  

 We are going to a show 4-H Sunday (today) that has a Hunter Hack class that is only 2 jumps 2 feet high.

 Hank also likes to jump and if you get him pointed in the right direction, he will usually manage to make it over the jump.  If you have a little skill in keeping him straight and keeping the strides right he can make it over gracefully.

Lets hope everything comes together well for the show.  I'm not sure J will be able to watch.

Sissy's Ears

Sissy has very interesting ears.  They are a bit different from most of the goats in our herd. 

 Several of the babies start out with ears that stick out but most of them start to droop and hang down as they get older.

 Sissy has really started growing (mostly because she eats grain with a bottle calf J has in the barn lot) but her ears haven't started to droop yet.

 She can flick them around independently of each other to knock a fly off,

or she can fold them back behind her head to become more aerodynamic when she's running or make herself  skinnier to fit through small spaces.   You've got to just love Sissy. (J say's, "NOT".)

Friday's Fences #45

I really have been enjoying the challenge of Friday's Fences.  Living on a farm can certainly have an advantage for subject matter pertaining to pictures of or through a fence. 

 I was down at the barn with J this morning while he was feeding the stocker cattle.

 We just had this barn lot fence built a couple of years ago so it doesn't have as much character as some of the older fences but sometimes strength is more important that character when it comes to fences.

 J brings the #50 feed sacks out on the 4-wheeler then empties them one at a time into the feed troughs.

One more week on this then they will be eating their meals in Nebraska.

Mini Vacation

Look where we got to go for the last 5 days.  

 V, E and I got to go to the beach for a few days.  J stayed home to take care of everything here.

 The weather was beautiful and the water warm.  The shark tooth hunting wasn't too bad.

 Can anyone see the tooth?

A sand bar was very near shore which left a trough between the beach and the sand bar where the water was very calm and nice for floating.  Sister C and Mama where there too.  A very nice mini vacation before back to school and off to college.

Friday's Fences #44

You know since we worked on the fence Monday that you would be seeing more of it on Friday.

 This section of the fence was very close to the creek and in the shade so it was perfect for the Spotted  touch-me-nots.

It's not much of a fence but the flowers are pretty.

School Shots

We have another load of cattle getting ready to go out west to the feed lot in a couple of weeks. 

 It's a mixed load of steers and heifers.  29 were bought earlier last month to go with the fall born calves we just weaned.  The purchased cattle had already had their vaccines so we needed to get ours up and vaccinate them before they leave.

 Once again, J gets them in more by calling than driving.  (see him in the barn lot)

 V took over in her usual position as head catcher.

 And E enjoys her spot in the pharmacy.

J did the hard work of bringing the cattle up the chute and I gave the vaccines.  It's like sending a child to school.  You don't know what they will come in contact with so it's best to try to protect against what you can.

The Spotted One

The baby goats are really growing. 

 This set of triplets is doing great.

 I just love how this spotted one looks.   It's hard to believe the mother is brown and the father white.

Too bad he's a whether and not a doe we could keep.
