Friday's Fences #112 (#49 for me)

Maybe I'm cheating a little by going back to April of last year when Sissy was hanging out in the barn yard.  But these were too cute to let go. 

A goat pretty much thinks if it can get it's head through everything else will fit.  We've pulled more than one goat out of a fence when it's horns got stuck.  Luckily, Sissy was smarter than that and never got stuck.

Silly Idea

The cold weather started to hit here on Monday.  I looked outside that afternoon and saw the prettiest big snowflakes drifting down.  

 I asked V is she wanted to come outside and take some riding in the snow horse pictures.  It seemed like a good idea at the time.

 The snow was starting to pile up and the horses were acting a little frisky.

But Otoelene was still listening to me and letting me take some action shots of the other horses.  

 There was quite a bit of shenanigans going on.

 Anyway, by the time I got to the barn the wind was really picking up.  I saddled up but Otoelene was not as calm as usual so I lunged her some.  Still no better.  By this time the snow was blowing horizontal to the ground and I decided it just wasn't worth getting hurt over.

I think Otoelene was ok with that decision.  Apparently, this was a very isolated blizzard.  There was no snow just a mile in either direction.

First You-Tube Post

I've been avoiding it since I started blogging but I think it is about time I start adding some videos to my posts, on occasion anyway.   I've been working with Wrangler with some consistency, at least once or twice every 7 to 10 days or so.  That's consistent for the winter anyway isn't it?  E decided Sunday to check out how he was doing.  I guess she was ok with what she saw because she went ahead and rode him some.

Here is a little snippet of his jog.  

 Not too bad for her second time on him.  He takes a lot of getting use to plus since he is only 4 he needs to get use to the rider too.

I'm seeing a lot of potential here.  

Bad Horse For Sale Pictures #5

Craig's list was the mine I got this week's gold from.  

What initially appears to be just your average "I don't care about getting a good picture so I'm not even going to brush my horse" owner, is in reality the lucky owner of a horse belonging to Ripley's Believe It or Not.  

 You can clearly see from this second view this horse's 5th leg.

But I'm really at a loss as to what the owner was trying to show here.

Weaning Calves

Since we are calving a little later and we had more fall pasture this year, J decided to keep the calves on the cows longer. 

 But Saturday was the round up and sorting day for most of the spring calving group.

 It was a beautiful clear day.

 We did have to go on a bit of a hike, out of the hay field, into the hollow,

 then missed the turn to the field we were aiming for and ended up at the water tank below the house.  Since E and J were already down there trying to turn them back, I took advantage of the time to take more pictures.

 They finally got them turned and headed in the right direction again.

 Then it was my job to make sure they took the turn through the gate.

 E had put up the temporary electric fence the day before so it was a straight shot from there into the barn lot.

 E was a big help in the sorting.  J dewormed the cows and calves as we drove them  to their respective pens one at a time.

 We gave J the task of counting since he is never exactly comfortable with our counts.

 Then the calves to one field and the cows to the next field for fence line weaning.

Too bad V was still at a friend's house and wasn't available to help.  But thank you E for a job well done.  I think the 4-wheeler is starting to get a little dirt on it.
