Today was weaning day for our fall calves. Joe had already done most of the prep work but we did have to stop and get some diesel fuel.
We already had a quarter of a tank. $164 sort of hurts. Joe said, ”how many time would we not get something because it was over $100, and now we are just burning it up.” I think the quote is something like, the farmer is the only one that buys retail, sells wholesale and pays freight both ways. A little more prep work involved spraying the gates for bees. Then we were ready.
Joe already had the cows and calves in the field next to the barn lot, so it was easy getting them up. The cows usually sort out well leaving the calves for us to sort through to select replacement heifers.
Joe then dewormed all the calves.
We kept back 7 replacements. Plus, we have that Holstein steer. Joe is keeping it until the Holstein sell next month.
Then it was a matter of loading 13 to 14 calves in the trailer for the trip to the house, four times. It was an all day job. Now we get to be serenaded for the next few days.

The farmer quote is brutal economics. A lot of work goes into calf weaning.
