New Faces

After selling more open cows than usual, Joe was looking for a few more to take through the winter.
We found these open 18 month old Hereford heifers advertised on Craig’s List.  The plan is to go ahead and breed them.  Then either sell them as bred heifers or calve them out and sell cow/calf pairs.

We vaccinated, dewormed and cut their tails.  (Just the long hair off the switch, it sort of makes them look better in cow terms)

NowJoe just has to decide which bull to use.  We just bought a registered horned Hereford bull that should be coming in a few days.  So we could use him, or a black angus to get some black baldies, or get a little wild and use a Brangus bull.   Decisions, decisions.

Having worked in an auction market, it seems that the best money for commercial calves was on the traditional calves, particularly Hereford, unless they were purebreds of a different colour like Charolais. But that's Alberta, things might be different in your neck of the woods.
